Niton UK is the market leader for handheld XRF instruments. This leadership encompasses not only the number of instruments sold and market share but also significant market experience and expertise in the handheld XRF product range. The Company represents the Thermo Scientific Niton XRF products manufactured in the USA, although the UK business is independent and not a subsidiary.
Thermo Scientific Niton products are very well respected for their quality, both in terms of their operation and their durability. The range is constantly being developed with new models being introduced, many of which have won innovation and design awards in recent years.
Collectively, the staff at Niton UK have over 100 years of experience in relevant markets to XRF instruments. The Company has a large installed base throughout the UK and Ireland and so have significant expertise with many applications for the instruments. A dedicated Salesteam is available to demonstrate and discuss the instrument most suited to your needs at your premises.
Niton UK is unique in being the only ISO registered company supplying such products. Therefore, customers can be confident in the quality of service and the consistency of support provided.
The business is also unique in having the only UK based service facility for handheld XRF instruments, so giving excellent turnaround times, competitive products having to be sent away for repair or recalibration. To assist customers still further, the Company offers a preventative maintenance contract, which includes the loan of instruments, wherever possible, to assist clients while their own is in for repair or servicing.
Niton UK has been established for over ten years, although the Managing Director, Malcolm Sibbald has significant business experience stretching back much further. He is ably supported by his son, Michael Sibbald, Sales & Marketing Director, and a comprehensive team of experienced head office and field based personnel to support the products, from initial sale and throughout their lifetime.

Niton UK History
Our history began when a company called Clandon Scientific was founded in 1976 distributing YSI medical and environmental products in the UK. Clandon also distributed a portable metal analysis instrument, the Metascop manufactured by Carl Zeiss in the former German Democratic Republic. Clandon had worldwide distribution rights for this product. Over the years Clandon sold in excess of 3000 Metascops.
During the mid 1980's YSI took a controlling interest in Clandon and in 1993 purchased the company outright. The company was then separated into two divisions, medical / environmental and industrial. The industrial division sold the Metascop, an operator-dependent instrument (low tech) and automated X-Ray Fluorescence and Optical Emission Spectroscopy instruments (high tech).
During 1999 the company was already aware of the Niton Corporation and its excellent range of XRF Instruments and agreed to represent them in the UK and Ireland. At a YSI UK board meeting it was decided to sell off the industrial business to enable YSI to focus on its core products. As the Director of what was, since 1999, the separate company YSI Metal Analysis Limited, Malcolm Sibbald took the opportunity to purchase the business.
As a completely separate company, it was logical for YSI Metal Analysis Limited to be renamed and, with their new distribution deal, Niton UK Limited was the obvious choice. Celebrating Our First Decade
From Millennium to Market Leadership – The First Ten Years
We are pleased to say that we have reached the ten-year milestone, since the inception of the Niton UK business in the year 2000. Originally, our Managing Director, Malcolm Sibbald, identified the Niton handheld XRF instruments, now manufactured by Thermo Scientific, as a potential new product introduction for the company he was working with at the time. However, after some consideration, they decided not to take up the range and instead offered Malcolm the distribution rights for the UK. As a result, Niton UK, still an independent privately owned business, was established.
Malcolm was able to recognise the quality of the product and the potential applications and opportunities that the Niton range represented. At the time the handheld x-ray tube, in the form of an XRF based instrument, was a very new technology and relatively unique. His confidence has been rewarded as Niton UK is now the established market leader for this type of product.
Malcolm was joined in the business, some six months after its inception, by his son Michael. In his role as Sales & Marketing Director, Michael brought the benefit of his sales experience and expertise and this continues with Michael being supported by a very experienced and talented sales, service and admin team.
Niton UK also now has the only UK based service facility for handheld XRF instruments, so providing excellent turnaround times for customers. We are also unique in being the only ISO registered company supplying such products.
