A ship sank in the seas off Indonesia over 800 years ago. Its main cargo was pottery. However, where it had sailed from was a mystery. Archaeologists used X-Ray fluorescence and a Niton analyser to identify the elements in the glazes and the clay used to make the porcelain bowls. So now we know which region of China this ship had come from and researchers are building a fuller picture of the naval trade networks in 12th century Asia.
