Cladding on buildings is in the spotlight. To prevent another Grenfell it is more critical than ever to know the materials on existing structures and to check the materials to be used on new structures.
Investigating materials in tight spots on tall buildings over 50 m above street level is now much easier with a handheld Niton analyser, but you need a good head for heights. Such surveys are proving invaluable in diagnosing many different types of condition. The XRF instrument has already proved especially successful in recognising the presence of lead-based paint, where hundreds of measurements may be taken in a single day from numerous locations. This has avoided additional works when stripping paint and has saved on the subsequent waste disposal.
The analyser can also run instant checks on critical items such as stone cladding fixings by determining the grade of stainless steel present. Metals and alloys are identified precisely by comparing each against certified reference standards. With the recent spotlight on external cladding, now more than ever, it is essential to check that materials supplied are of the right quality. A few hours on site undertaking such analysis provides reassurance.
