Legislation such as WEEE regulations, RoHS, EN71, etc, restricts the amounts of lead, mercury, cadmium and other elements allowable in electrical and electronic equipment and consumer products. Niton instruments provide an ideal means of testing equipment for compliance.
For example, cadmium is one of the principal harmful substances to be dealt with by WEEE and RoHS directives. Leads, connectors, and case parts must contain less than 100ppm cadmium, but some imported components have been tested at over 500ppm! Certain EU customs agencies are using Niton instruments to impound failed goods, whilst high profile European Manufacturers that have experienced disruptions are now using Niton instruments to test and reject supplied goods. Suppliers outside Europe that wish to sell into the EEL need to have just as much regard for WEEE and RoHS legislation as Europeans.
Being a truly portable, non-destructive testing method, Niton instruments can provide valuable assistance in screening for the three metallic toxins cited in the legislation. For example, in-situ WEEE toxin testing is particularly difficult to achieve, as most methods require samples to be analysed using laboratory facilities and for those samples to be taken inevitably requires damaging the item to be tested.
Niton analysers can test a component directly for WEEE toxins. In addition, more accurate ex-situ WEEE toxin content testing can be performed by preparing samples and analysing them using our optional test stand and sample preparation kit.
With the ability to test a variety of samples for compliance with RoHS and WEEE regulations, Niton instruments can greatly assist in assessing potential exposure to toxins.
